About
Goa has a rich and fascinating history that dates back long before Portuguese rule. References to Goa appear in the Ashokan rock edicts, where its inhabitants were identified as the Rashtrikas, Peitinikas, and Bhojas.
During the Mauryan Empire, the influence of the official language, Prakrit, helped shape the development of Konkani, the language widely spoken in Goa today.
Following the decline of the Mauryan Empire after Emperor Ashoka's death in 232 BC, Goa came under the rule of the Satavahanas, who transformed it into an important trading port with commercial links to the Middle East, the Roman Empire, and Africa.
Over the following centuries, several Hindu dynasties, including the Bhoja Yadavas, Chalukyas of Badami, Shilaharas, and Kadambas, ruled the region, contributing to its cultural and architectural heritage.
The Portuguese arrived in Goa in 1510 and established it as the capital of their eastern empire. Interestingly, during part of their rule, Portugal itself was governed by Spain between 1580 and 1640 due to the Portuguese succession crisis following the death of King Sebastian.
Portuguese influence introduced European architecture, Christianity, and new trade networks, leaving a lasting impact on Goa's culture. Today, Goa's historic forts, churches, temples, and heritage sites reflect the unique blend of ancient Indian traditions and centuries of Portuguese influence.
