National Museum, New Delhi

National Museum, the prime cultural organization of India, was inaugurated on 15th August 1949 at President House and moved to its permanent location at Janpath on 18th December 1960.

The Museum continued to grow its collection through gifts that were sought painstakingly, artefacts were collected through its Arts Purchase

Committee. The Museum presently holds approximately 2,00,000 objects of diverse nature, both Indian as well as foreign, and its holdings cover a time span of more than five thousand years of Indian cultural heritage.

Museum has in its possession the rich heritage of Indian Miniature Paintings, Central Asian Antiquities, Numismatics & Epigraphy, Pre- Columbian and Western Art collections, Musical Instruments, Indian Arms and Armour etc.

An important attraction of the museum is the gallery on Buddhism: A Spiritual Journey, eminently displaying the sacred relics of the Buddha (5th-4th century BCE) in the custody of the National Museum. ​
