About
Leave Kolkata behind and travel into the heart of medieval Bengal on a heritage journey to Gaur and Pandua, where crumbling gateways, soaring minarets and ancient mosques quietly tell stories of a lost capital.
From Kolkata, the journey takes you north towards Malda and onward to the historic landscapes of Gaur and Pandua, once important centres of power in Bengal. Gaur, which flourished as a capital under successive dynasties, reveals its past through magnificent surviving monuments.
Explore the imposing Dakhil Darwaza, the grand brick gateway that once marked the entrance to the fortified city, before discovering the elegant Bara Sona Mosque (Baro Duari).
Continue to the Firoz Minar, rising above the surrounding landscape, and visit the Kadam Rasul Mosque, a place of continuing religious significance.
Then travel to Pandua, another remarkable chapter in Bengal’s medieval story. Here, the vast Adina Mosque, commissioned by Sultan Sikander Shah in 1369, is the unforgettable highlight.
Its immense arches and surviving architectural details offer a vivid sense of the scale and ambition of the Bengal Sultanate.
Along the way, there is time to slow down: walk among ancient brickwork, notice the patterns weathered into stone, meet local people and sample the flavours of Malda.
This is not simply a monument-hopping excursion; it is a chance to experience Bengal through its landscapes, memories and layers of history.
Come for the architecture, stay for the stories, and return to Kolkata with a deeper sense of the Bengal that existed long before the modern city emerged.
