Twilight Tribal tales at Aarey

As the city shifts into its evening rush, Aarey Colony moves in the opposite direction. The forests deepen, the light turns golden, and the air fills with the sounds of a world that has existed here long before Mumbai was a city.

Aarey is home to one of the last Adivasi communities living within Mumbai's urban limits, and for generations they have walked these forests, known every tree by name, and carried knowledge that no textbook has ever recorded.

The Twilight Tribal Trail is your invitation to walk alongside them and experience Aarey the way it was always meant to be experienced.

Led by a tribal woman from the local Adivasi community and assisted by a trained Naturalist Explorers naturalist, this guided trail winds through unmarked, unpaved forest paths, village hamlets, and two local mandirs where the community worships their nature and wildlife gods.

Along the way your tribal guide introduces you to wild vegetables, edible plants, and medicinal herbs that grow naturally in the forest, sharing their local names, their uses, and how the community cooks and prepares them in their daily lives.

The naturalist helps you read the forest around you, spotting birds, insects, reptiles, and the tracks and traces left behind by larger mammals moving through the undergrowth.

The trail ends at a mandir, a quiet and fitting close to an evening spent deep in the heart of Aarey.

Throughout the walk your tribal guide speaks openly about the Adivasi way of life, their deep dependence on the forest, and the very real challenges their community faces today.

This is not just a nature walk. It is a rare, honest, and deeply moving encounter with the original guardians of Aarey's forests and a reminder of everything that is at stake when a city forgets the people and the wild spaces that have always held it together.
