About

There are few places in the Eastern Himalaya where one can travel through such a dramatic range of habitats in just a few days. Rising from the warm broadleaf forests of lower East Sikkim to the cool, rhododendron-clad slopes of Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary, this landscape is a haven for birds, making it one of the region's finest birding destinations.

This expedition is centred on birdwatching and bird photography, exploring the elevational gradient of Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary and its surrounding forests during April, one of the best months for Himalayan birding.

The blooming rhododendrons not only paint the mountainsides in vibrant colours but also provide a spectacular backdrop as mixed hunting flocks, pheasants, laughingthrushes, and other Himalayan specialities become increasingly active.

Among the many birds we hope to encounter are Blood Pheasant, Satyr Tragopan, Himalayan Monal, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Fire-tailed Sunbird, Green-tailed Sunbird, Rufous Sibia, Blue-winged Minla, Golden-breasted Fulvetta, Whiskered Yuhina, Brown Parrotbill, Streak-breasted Scimitar-Babbler, White-tailed Nuthatch, Snow pigeon, Blue-fronted Redstart, Himalayan Buzzard, Alpine accentor, Black-faced Laughingthrush, and Common Rosefinch.

Some of the region's most sought-after rarities include Ward's Trogon, Beautiful Nuthatch, Scarlet Finch, Red-faced Liocichla, Gold-naped Finch, Spotted Laughingthrush, and White-throated Laughingthrush.

While wildlife can never be guaranteed, the itinerary has been carefully curated to maximise opportunities across a wide range of habitats and elevations.

For birders visiting the mid-elevation Himalaya for the first time, Pangolakha offers an exceptional introduction to the region's avifauna. Participants can realistically expect the opportunity to encounter 80–100 potential lifers over the course of the expedition, depending on weather, seasonal conditions, and individual birding experience.

While wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, the itinerary has been carefully curated to maximise species diversity by exploring multiple elevations and habitats, making every day in the field a rewarding experience.

Throughout the expedition, we will stay in locally run mountain homestays, enjoying simple, freshly prepared home-cooked meals that reflect the hospitality of the region.

Accommodation is comfortable yet basic, allowing us to stay close to the best birding locations while supporting local communities.

This is a fixed departure and arrival expedition. The group will depart from NJP Railway Station/Bagdogra Airport at 9:00 AM on the first day and begin the return journey at 8:00 AM on the final day.

As this is a remote mountain landscape, participants should expect limited mobile connectivity and intermittent electricity. Carrying a power bank and at least one spare camera battery is strongly recommended so one battery can charge while the other is in use during the day's birding sessions.
