About
Kutch is one of the last places on earth where ancient craft traditions are not museum pieces — they are morning routines. Weavers rise before dawn to set up their looms.
Block printers mix natural dyes by hand. Rogan artists draw intricate patterns from a paint made of castor oil that has not changed in five centuries. The land itself — vast, semi-arid, stretched between the white salt desert and the Arabian Sea — seems to have preserved these traditions in the same way it preserves everything: quietly, stubbornly, and with extraordinary beauty.
This five-day journey, rooted in the work of Khamir, a craft and livelihood organisation based in Bhuj, moves through the villages, workshops, and landscapes of Kutch to connect travellers directly with the artisans who keep these traditions alive.
You will not observe from a distance. You will sit beside block printers at their tables, handle the tools of Kharad weavers, watch a Rogan master draw a single unbroken line of castor-oil paint with a stylus, and eat lunch in the spaces where craft is made and taught.
At the Living and Learning Design Centre, you will encounter the conversation between ancient technique and contemporary design that is giving these traditions a future as well as a past.
The journey ends at the edge of the world — at Dholavira, a 5,000-year-old city of the Indus Valley Civilisation rising from the Rann of Kutch, and at the White Rann itself, where the salt flats stretch to the horizon and the light, at sunrise, is unlike anything else in India.
