About

Located in the northern suburbs of Mumbai, within the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the Kanheri Caves are among the largest and most significant Buddhist rock-cut architectural complexes in India.

With approximately 119 caves carved into the basalt rock, Kanheri represents a remarkable history of Buddhist monastic life, art, architecture and spiritual practice.

Developed over several centuries, from around the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE, the complex served as an important centre of Buddhist learning and religious activity.

Its caves include monasteries (viharas), prayer halls (chaityas), stupas, water cisterns and inscriptions that offer glimpses into the lives of monks, patrons and travellers who once inhabited this landscape.

Although several caves remain incomplete, many structures have survived for nearly 2,000 years, bearing witness to generations of artistic labour, devotion and intellectual exchange.

Beyond their architectural significance, the Kanheri Caves tell timeless tales of a landscape where nature, spirituality and human ingenuity came together, leaving behind a remarkable cultural legacy.
