About

Step behind the ornate façades of Central Kolkata's oldest family mansions on this expert-led bonedi bari Durga Puja heritage walk. Long before community pandals lined the city's streets, the true story of Durga Puja in Kolkata unfolded in the thakur dalans of merchant and zamindar families — and this route takes you inside eight of the most storied.

Trace nearly two centuries of history as your curator unpacks the origins of each household puja: the 1857 puja of Badanchandra Ray, kin to Raja Sukhomoy Ray of Posta; the socially radical puja of philanthropist Motilal Seal, opened to ordinary people at a time when the elite Shobhabajar celebrations kept them out; and the Dhar, Basu Mallick and Bandyopadhyay family pujas, each with its own deity form, ritual tradition and architectural signature.

Along the way, you'll discover why some households worship a rare two-armed Abhaya Durga instead of Mahishasura Mardini, how a dream-command founded one puja in 1883, and why families still serve panta, kochur shak and ilish tok on Dashami.

You'll admire five-arched cast-iron dalans, Daker saj idols, and rituals drawn from the Kalika Purana, Brihannandikeshwar Purana and Vaishnav traditions — details that even lifelong Kolkatans rarely encounter.

This is not a rushed pandal-hop. It's a slow, story-rich journey through the living heritage of Bengal's aristocratic pujas, guided by a verified local expert who brings each family's past to life.
